With his s*x trafficking and racketeering trial set for next month, Sean “Diddy” Combs has strengthened his defense team by bringing on Brian Steel, the seasoned Atlanta lawyer known for helping secure Young Thug’s release last year.
On Tuesday, Steel filed a motion in Manhattan federal court requesting approval to join Combs’ legal team, a required step for attorneys practicing outside their home state. His addition is a notable boost for Combs, who is facing serious allegations of long-term abuse against women.
Steel will work alongside Marc Agnifilo—a former federal prosecutor known for defending Martin Shkreli and Keith Raniere—and his partner Teny Geragos. Steel gained national attention for his aggressive defense of Young Thug (Jeffery Williams), who faced RICO and gang-related charges in Georgia. Throughout the case, Steel’s composed yet relentless courtroom style stood out. He was even briefly held in contempt after challenging the judge over an alleged secret meeting with prosecutors, a move that ultimately led to the judge’s removal and Steel’s vindication.
Combs’ case bears some resemblance to Young Thug’s, as both involve RICO charges and accusations of leading criminal enterprises. However, while Thug was accused of violent gang-related crimes, Combs faces claims of using his celebrity and businesses to exploit and silence women.
Still, Combs may be hoping Steel can replicate the success he achieved for Thug, who avoided prison after a dramatic trial and was sentenced to 15 years probation.
Since Combs’ indictment in September, his legal team has undergone several changes, including hiring appellate expert Alexandra Shapiro and the departure of Anthony L. Ricco earlier this year.
