A High Court in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Jide Afolabi Sunday for brutally attacking his girlfriend with acid after she rejected his marriage proposal.
33-year-old Sunday faced charges of attempted murder for the horrific acid attack on his girlfriend, Glory Sylvester Ita. The incident left Glory with severe injuries, including the loss of an ear and Bosom, caused by the corrosive substance.
According to testimonies presented during the trial, Sunday not only poured acid on Glory but also attempted to push her into a pool in an apparent attempt to drown her. The attack stemmed from a heated argument that erupted during a meeting at Reel Home Hotel in Calabar on October 21, 2022. Jide, who had been in a relationship with Glory for nine months, had proposed marriage, but she refused and threatened to end the relationship. In response, he unleashed the acid on her, causing extensive harm to her body.
Glory’s cries for help alerted hotel customers and the manager, who rushed to her rescue. The convicted assailant initially denied his involvement but later begged for mercy, claiming he had repented.
In a landmark judgment, Justice Blessing Egwu sentenced Jide Afolabi Sunday to life imprisonment and ordered him to pay N10 million in compensation for the damages caused by the acid attack.
